Common Ground (2014)

for string quartet | 14'

This piece was conceived as an exploration of the tension between individual voices and collectivity. In the first movement, each instrument of the quartet dominates one section and shares a unique voice and personality. Movement II places the instruments in closer commonality with one another, and explores the tension that develops from different takes on shared musical ideas. Finally, in the last movement, some semblance of balance is achieved, but not without sacrifices.
