At this point, near the end of the opera, John is going mad, believing Elizabeth to be in the room with him. He hears her voice echoing in the background. Meanwhile, Jane is trying to comfort him. John becomes convinced that he must journey back to Roanoke to discover the truth, but Jane recognizes that unless John frees his mind from the memory of Elizabeth, he will never be able to find true peace. Jane tries to tell John this, but it provokes him into a rage, and he casts her out. Following this, John becomes completely mad and begins interaction with the imaginary presence of Elizabeth. The opera ends with John and Elizabeth walking off stage hand in hand.
