"Aurora" has several meanings, including both the polar lights and "dawn" in another sense. The aurora inspires many shapes in the piece, but it is not the only natural and "cold-weather" image drawn on; others include the stillness of water in the fog, the majesty and sheer breadth of nature, the simultaneous terror and playfulness of the wild, the comfort and emptiness of the night sky, and any number of images or sensations that could be perceived. As a title, "Aurora" also seeks to encompass and unify all these feelings.
